THE SCHOOLS UNITE NETWORK “SUN”
TO THE MEMORY
OF
JOHN P. McDERMOTT
On Thursday, December 22, 2005 our close friend and one of the founders of the Police Liaison Group, retired Inspector Jack McDermott, of the New York City Police Department, passed away.
A tireless and dedicated member of our community, Jack worked with us to develop the concept of the PLG almost fourteen years ago. He was never more than a phone call away and his response record was impeccable.
Many of you may remember that when we formed the PLG, our neighborhood was strewn with crack viles; drug dealers; prostitutes were conducting business in the alleyways of our churches and in the vestibules of our brownstones; and used condoms were discarded on our stairwells and sidewalks. There was public drinking and urinating on the streets, especially on Broadway in the nineties, where the OTB stood. It was Jack McDermott who took the initiative to help us eradicate these situations in our neighborhood.
He also strongly supported the PLG in our efforts to get rid of the OTB on Broadway and 91st Street; and called upon some of the finest officers of the New York City Police Department to work with us on many of our projects.
Jack’s outstanding leadership could only be matched by his warmth and humor. Always with us, for every major event; he would often drop by our monthly meetings to see what more could be done; and never without a smile on his face and a funny story to share with the group.
The PLG, in cooperation with Manhattan North’s NYPD, has established a new initiative in memory of our friend and mentor, Inspector Jack McDermott, called the Schools Unite Network “SUN”. All donations to SUN will not only be contributions to the safety and well being of our children and neighborhood, but will be honoring the memory of a special member of our law enforcement community as well.
